Lot 5 house at Broomgrass was designed as a single home with a private guest wing and a second floor with two offices for the owners. The flat site offered panoramic vistas of farm fields to the South, woods to North and East, and mountain sunsets to the West. The house offers passive and active solar features with roof overhangs that only block the strong and high summer sun and solar panels with battery backup to provide a constant source of energy.

The kitchen features locally crafted solid wood and plywood cabinets and concrete countertops.  The raised bar features bark-edged wood planks with butterfly joinery.

The exterior walls are 2 x 6 construction filled with closed cell insulation rendering a tight envelope with an R value in excess of 33. The hall leading to the guest wing features a kitchenette and a high loft with a ladder for overflow guests that folds against the wall when not in use.  The ground floor is heated with radiant tubing in the slab floor and supplemented with a Maine Wood Heat masonry heater that efficiently burns wood while also heating the house.
