GDA designed this home on a western sloping field in Broomgrass, an organic farm community. The Client’s goals were centered on energy efficiency, use of natural materials, and consideration of site conditions. Straw bale construction was chosen early on in the design process as were passive solar strategies. The parti of the 2200 sf home is made up of three principal volumes that house the living areas, master bedroom suite, and the “Boys House” (garage & guest rooms), named for the client’s three adult sons.
Low sloped rooflines were chosen to streamline the home’s profile on this sometimes windy bluff. A stair tower connects the Boy’s House to the foyer and main living area as well as a roof deck. A living roof is applied to the roof surfaces flanking the roof deck area to reduce storm water run-off and solar gain/heat loss. Triple-glazed windows and a generous roof overhang assist in making this home energy efficient in all four seasons.
