The City's project goal was to return Charles Washington Hall, completed in 1874, to it's former glory and to help spur economic development. The plan was to create synergy between a farmer's market, a restaurant, a visitor's center and a multi-purpose meeting hall, all under the same roof. Work included removing inappropriate additions, repairing structural damage, restoring historic interior and exterior surfaces and complying with energy and life safety codes.
Extensive restoration was undertaken of the three front panels in order to stabilized the wall, the first floor masonry arches, and the beautiful second floor windows. Hand-made bricks were salvaged and reused in the reconstruction. Paint analysis yielded a palette of historic colors from the early years of the building's life. Historic interior finishes such as wood and tin ceilings, plaster walls, tile floors and second floor windows were restored. Wood floors, first floor windows and the cupola weathervane were replicated. |
Mechanical systems were designed to be largely concealed. GDA designed a faux pie safe to hide the air return in the market space and a custom chandelier outfitted with LED lamps, to approximate the fixture that once illuminated the main Hall. GDA also assisted the city in securing Federal and State Tax Credits for the renovation in order to recover 30% of the investment.
