The Claggett Center is the camp, conference, and retreat center of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland and operates in ministry partnership with the Episcopal Diocese of Washington. An iconic symbol of Claggett’s history and legacy is the hemlock-framed barn, which was built in 1898. The campus was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Since then, the barn has been maintained as a working, historical structure.
This groundbreaking restoration project was awarded $760,000 in tax credits by the Maryland Historic Trust–the first barn in Maryland to receive this rigorous award. The project also received similar funding from the National Park Service. The historic siding remains visible on the interior with new thermally performing insulated shell on the exterior of the barn. A compatible addition was designed to mimic the original milking barn addition that was demolished years ago. The addition houses a commercial kitchen, restrooms and mechanical spaces so that the large open spaces within the barn could be maintained. The new lower-level dining hall floors are stained to indicate the original stable feed aisles, and the barn’s original wood floors were repurposed to create the new dining hall tables. The newly-consecrated space will allow the Claggett Center and the Episcopal Dioceses of Maryland and Washington to expand youth and adult ministries for generations to come. - 5,885 square feet of climate-controlled gathering space - Large group gathering/dining space for groups of 270+ people - ADA accessibility - Hardwood floating floor perfect for dancing - Stunning views of Sugarloaf Mountain - Full range of A/V equipment, including free Wi-Fi - Complete commercial kitchen fit into 619 square feet of space Client: The Claggett Center Contract Officer: James Ryder, Claggett Center Co-Executive Director LOCATION: Adamstown, MD STATUS: Complete COST: Withheld |
