GDA was awarded this competitive commission for a new three-story, 45,000 SF medical office building to serve northern Berkeley County. The end solution is a long rectangular mass that is oriented on the
East-West axis in order to function as a passive solar collector. Limitation of glazing on the north façade, use of sun shades on the south and dot-screen glazing on the east and west will limit excessive heat loss and gain. Locally sourced building materials have been specified including floor finishes, cabinetry, exterior building skin, mechanical equipment and landscaping. A living roof will pre-treat storm water and eliminate the need for detention ponds on site, thus allowing space for a future building. Other site features include permeable paving and boi-retention basins between parking lanes. |
Other design features include a dual building parti - a staff entry core layout was configured on the second floor while on the first floor the conventional exam room layout was preferred. Terraces on the second and third floors provide space for staff to step outside, have lunch and relax while on break. Internal corridors receive borrowed natural light from glazed offices and nurse stations.
