GDA developed four concepts for a newly renovated 11,000 sf office environment on the sixth floor of the Martinsburg VAMC’s principle building 500. Based on a VA-adopted “Plane Tree” model, the interiors were purposefully designed to feel less institutional, making use of materials such as wood, stone and glass. The selected design featured a curvilinear circulation path that broke up the building’s typical long linear corridors.
GDA introduced several materials and textures such as bamboo patterned flooring, fieldstone wall surfaces, glass partitions with sea grass and a reception desk with aged bronze metal. Other key elements to the design included daylighting, by adding skylights and windows, use of accent colors, break-out rooms for impromptu team meetings and improved sight lines between work areas.
